With the goal of enabling more people to enjoy the benefits of getting outside, to promote equity and reduce barriers to access nature in the city and beyond, and in support of the sharing economy and reducing waste, the Ottawa Outdoor Gear Library was launched in 2021.
Over the past 18 months, we have grown to over 800 individual members, and have supported more than 30 partner organizations through gear support and outdoor programming.

The purpose of the Library is to provide opportunities for individuals and groups to borrow equipment with as few barriers as possible. We operate on the principle that cost and systemic barriers should not prevent opportunities to try new activities and to enjoy the physical and mental health benefits of recreation and connecting with nature in the outdoors. This could be in your neighbourhood park in the city, a community garden plot, along one of the paths or waterways in the capital, or in the conservation areas, provincial and national parks nearby.
In particular, the Ottawa Outdoor Gear Library seeks to support people living with low incomes, women, youth, BIPoC communities, 2SLGBTQ+ people, and newcomers to access gear for outdoor activities.
As we build the library inventory, we’re reaching out for community support.
If you have:
- outdoor equipment;
- partnership opportunities;
- funds to help our operating costs;
- funding and grant finding ideas;
- time to volunteer;
...we would welcome these contributions.
We are a lean team. Your support and contributions will enable us to meet our goals, and create a gear library that is accessible to everyone. Your generous donation will help offset the expenses of this community initiative.
The Ottawa Outdoor Gear Library is a community initiative. We are passionate about health equity, spending time outdoors, and safe access to a clean environment. If you are interested in joining our team, please get in touch!
The Ottawa Outdoor Gear Library is an initiative of the National Capital Region Equitable Recreation Network, a federally-registered Not-For-Profit organization.
